Pro Tools Apogee Duet edition.“We are very excited to be working with Avid as the premier I/O Connectivity Partner,” said Betty Bennett, Apogee CEO and Co-Founder. “Our two paths have been intertwined since the early days of the digital recording revolution. While Pro Tools Software was first defining an exciting paradigm shift in our industry, we were perfecting AD/DA conversion and hardware technology for digital audio. Our first collaboration was in 1997 and featured Apogee’s AD-8000 as a front end for the Pro Tools 24 MIX system. Today we are very pleased to join forces once again in offering customers these two outstanding solutions.”Defining Digital Audio - The Path to PartnershipApogee’s hardware and Pro Tools Software have both played significant roles in the advancement of digital audio recording. In 1985, Apogee's founders developed special technology that addressed the inherent brittleness and distortion heard on the new listening medium of the day, compact discs (CDs). Apogee’s unique 924 and 944 anti-aliasing filters were used in high-end Sony and Mitsubishi digital recording systems to make the CD format sound warmer and more like analog.

These Apogee products were key to the acceptance and acceleration of early digital recording and established Apogee as a leader in the field. Around the same time, Pro Tools (then Sound Tools) was forever transforming the recording and editing workflow by bringing it to the computer and making it more efficient and flexible than ever before. By 1997, Apogee was developing premium standalone digital audio converters. Apogee's AD-8000 became very popular among professional Pro Tools users. Today, Apogee’s Duet and Quartet audio interfaces, as well as Avid’s Pro Tools Software, are regarded as some of the highest quality tools available for music creation among industry professionals and aspiring artists. 1. If you have an older Apogee Firewire device, it is possible to use it with a newer Mac that doesn't have Firewire ports. This is done through Thunderbolt only, or Macs that support Thunderbolt through USB-C ports. Do NOT use a USB to Firewire adapter. These do not allow the proper transfer of data and won't work properly.

From an Apogee email:'Dear Apogee User,In 2003, Apogee released Mini-Me & Mini-DAC, which were the first interfaces to utilize Apple’s FireWire Core Audio driver, included in Apple’s Mac OS X. Duet FireWire, Ensemble FireWire along with several audio interfaces from other manufacturers’ also take advantage of this driver, meaning that the audio driver needed for your Duet FireWire or Ensemble FireWire comes with your Mac and is supported by Apple. Relying on Apple’s Core Audio driver offers many benefits - low latency performance, outstanding OS integration and the resources of Apple’s superior engineering team. Apple began to phase out FireWire connectivity in 2012 on all Mac computers. With significant improvements to USB audio and the introduction of Thunderbolt, the performance and stability offered with FireWire audio interfaces has been surpassed.

As a result, Apple has discontinued development and maintenance of their FireWire Core Audio driver for the new Mac OS X El Capitan. For this reason, we simply cannot ensure a stable/reliable experience for users of our FireWire audio interfaces who choose to upgrade to this new Mac OS release.Due to the fact that Apple is no longer developing their FireWire Core Audio Driver, Apogee’s Duet FireWire and Ensemble FireWire will not be officially supported on OS X 10.11 El Capitan or any future Mac OS X release. While these products may work normally for some users, Apogee will not be able to provide technical support, troubleshooting or bug fixes for any software related issues you experience on OS X 10.11 El Capitan or higher. Please note, Apogee will continue to fully support our FireWire users who remain on Mac OS X 10.10 or below, just as we have done since the products were first introduce in 2006. In addition, we will continue to provide repair services for the hardware components as long as parts continue to be available. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.'

I have no experience with this but thought I would pass it along. Technology always outdates itself, I remember people with huge Nubus Protools rigs that became redundant overnight in the 90's. Same with SCSI, same with any number of technologies.

It a PITA but it's what happens. What is blowing my mind though is the amount people completely ignoring the 6 month Audio and Video new OS rule, upgrading to El Capitan straight away and then wondering why their shit ain't working. All over the ProTools, Logic, Ableton, Cubase, NI, Apogee, RME, Focusrite etc. Forums the same story.6 months at least before upgrading an OS guys. I installed El Capitan on my 2010 Macbook pro to see if my ensemble would work. There were no issues.

It was recognized and i could get levels in Logic X. Didn't do much else, but cant forsee any problems.Im going to make a back up of my imac before i try anything, my only concern is there being no firewire port on my Imac that there might be an issue. I doubt there will be though. Im surprised anyone is having issues if its just a simple upgrade over Yosemite. El Capitan runs alot better than yosemite on the MBP, which is why i personally want to upgrade, i always found yosemite a pain in the ass.Has anyone tried ensemble or duet with a FW to Thunderbolt adapter with El Capitan?I did have to reinstall Maestro, it did not work before i did that.
