Excel for the web offers access keys, keyboard shortcuts to navigate the ribbon. If you’ve used access keys to save time on Excel for desktop computers, you’ll find access keys very similar in Excel for the web. In Excel for the web, access keys all start with Alt+Windows logo key, then add a letter for the ribbon tab. The backstage view helps in creating new sheets, saving and opening sheets, printing and sharing sheets, and so on. Getting to the Backstage View is easy. Familiar way to find out the Document Properties if you have Classic Menu for Office

Classic Menu for Office will bring back the familiar user interface of Excel 2003/XP(2002)/2000 into Microsoft Excel 2007/2010/2013. You can easily find out the Document Properties in Excel 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 365 following your use habit adopted in Excel 2003. There are two methods to find out the Document Properties if you have Classic Menu for Office:

The Document Properties in File menu if you have Classic Menu for Office
  • Click the Menus tab;
  • Click the File drop down menu;
  • Then you will view the View Document Properties item, you can get it from figure 1 easily.

  • Click this item, you will view the Workbook Properties dialog box. In the dialog box, you will view the workbook properties.
  • Click the Summary tab;
  • Then you will view the document properties of current workbook.

  • Click the Menus tab;
  • Click the View drop down menu;
  • Then you will view the Properties item at the bottom of View drop down menu list.

Click the Properties item, the Document Properties panel will be added between Ribbon and workspace. In the Document Properties panel, you can easily view and edit workbook Author, Title, subject, keywords, status, commands, and more. The figure 4 may help you more:

Find out the Document Properties in Ribbon if you do not have Classic Menu for Office

View Document Properties in Excel 2010/2013/2016/2019 Ribbon if you do not have Classic Menu for Office
  • Click the File tab and get into backstage view;
  • Click the Info button at left bar;
  • Then you will view the document properties at the right panel.

Apart from viewing document Properties in backstage view, there are two more options with the Properties button. Click the Properties button, and you will view Show Document Panes item and Advanced Properties item.

  • Click the Show Document Panel item under Properties button, you will view the Document Properties Panel is added between Ribbon and workspace, just as figure 4 shows.
  • Click the Advanced Properties item under Properties button, you will view the Workbook Properties dialog box. Under the Summary tab, you can view and edit current workbook properties, just as figure 2 shows.

  • Click the Office Button;
  • Click the Prepare button at left bar;
  • In the right panel, click the Properties button;
  • Then you will view the Document Properties Panel as figure 4 shows.

Word 2016’s Backstage View screen is a one-stop shop for many common tasks, including starting new documents and saving files. The Windows version of Backstage View also includes additional features, such as exporting files, printing, and changing certain software settings.

You can get to Backstage View at any time by clicking on File (Windows or Word Online) or the File icon (macOS) located at the top left of your screen. Navigating Backstage View is easy, thanks to the simple menu displayed on the left side of the screen:

We will go into more detail on many of these menu items later in the book. For the time being, here’s a quick overview of the tools in Backstage View for the Windows version of Word 2016:

  • Info. Review your document’s properties such as file size, page count, and word count. You can also access tools for protecting, inspecting, and managing the document.
  • New. Start a new document from scratch or select a template for customization.
  • Open. Open an existing document stored on your computer, network, or the cloud.
  • Save and Save As. Select one of these options to save your document under its current file name or save a copy in a new location, under a new file name or as a different file type.
  • Print. This is where you will go when it’s time to print your Word document.
  • Share. Word 2016 includes a number of collaboration features. You will learn the basics of sharing documents in Chapter 5 of Microsoft Word In 30 Minutes.
  • Export. Save a document as .doc or .docx, or create a PDF version.
  • Close. If you don’t want to close your Word document using the “X” in the top-right corner of the document, you can click Close in Backstage View.
  • Account. If you have purchased an Office 365 subscription, you can access your account settings and recent updates here.
  • Options. Word 2016 includes plenty of settings you can customize to your liking.

To exit the Backstage View screen and return to your document, simply click on the back arrow at the top of the menu (Windows or Word Online) or click the Cancel button (macOS).

Backstage View for the Mac version of Word 2016 covers new file creation and opening existing documents, as well as access to basic account information. However, Save As, Print, Share, Export, and Close are not visible from the Mac version of Backstage View and have to be accessed via the File drop-down menu at the top of the screen. As for Options, many settings in the Mac version of Word 2016 can be accessed via Word > Preferences.
