I'm still on Catalina, and I'm still using both Adguard & Little Snitch in KEXT mode. Both are working fine together; both have always been working fine together. But I see trouble brewing on the horizon.
See here – https://obdev.at/support/littlesnitch – under 'Troubleshooting' > 'Incompatibility of Little Snitch with other software on Big Sur 11.0.1'
Adguard: Programs filtered by Adguard may hang when they try to access the Internet
and
Various ad blockers: These may defeat the purpose of Little Snitch because they catch Internet traffic and reinject it from their own process. Little Snitch therefore does not see the originating process.
Imtransferagent Little SnitchLittleThat second quote is the important one, and I tested this on Catalina 10.15.7 with Adguard in NEXT mode, while Little Snitch was still in KEXT mode.
The result is that (probably because it goes for full path URLs, not just domains and IP addresses) Adguard will intercept network connections first, while Little Snitch, being the more 'general' tool, will come second, and then Little Snitch does not know from which app or process a network connection is originating, i.e. Little Snitch will only see the Adguard MITM as the originator. So Little Snitch is inoperable, because Adguard destroys its main functionality.
Judging from the notes by Objective Development, this is also true for Big Sur with both applications running in NEXT mode.
This is an absolute no-go, because Little Snitch is the far more important tool, especially for security purposes.
I know that Apple is probably to blame here, but is there currently any way to undo this fiasco? Maybe a setting in Adguard that will do the trick? Maybe by using the local proxy setting? Or do I have to accept the fact that I paid for an Adguard lifetime family license for nothing? Because if this problem—and it is a HUGE problem—doesn't get fixed, I will have to resort to Adguard's browser extension, and use /etc/hosts for system-wide adblocking.
Any information would be very much appreciated, especially about your plans on how to rectify this issue.

This is due to a limitation in Apple’s Network Extension API, which surprisingly whitelists a number of system services like Maps, FaceTime, App Store or Software Update and therefore doesn’t report the network activity of these services to third-party application firewalls.

The use of this new API is now mandatory for third-party developers on macOS Big Sur, because Apple no longer supports the previous kernel extension based approach, which didn’t suffer from this limitation.

We’ve been investigating a solution in Little Snitch to make these whitelisted connections visible by means of alternative techniques. This solution is already available in our latest nightly build of Little Snitch 5.1.

There’s an ongoing discussion about this problem in various online media, and we assume that Apple will address these concerns in a future macOS update. See our blog article to learn more about this topic.

UPDATE: This issue has been resolved in macOS Big Sur 11.2. Apple has removed this whitelist completely, allowing third-party firewalls like Little Snitch to reliably monitor and filter any network traffic.
